Snapping the backbone
Article Abstract:
The Angolan government has captured strongholds of the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), following a tactical withdrawal by UNITA forces which has meant that little damage has occurred. UNITA may use guerrilla warfare following these losses. Government forces previously halted their offensive against UNITA in 1994, when they were about to capture Jonas Savimbi, UNITA leader, due to calls from politicians. UNITA was able to rearm, and launch new attacks. The government is unlikely to want to negotiate with UNITA again.

Battling, in the rain
Article Abstract:
There are reports of a government victory in the Angolan civil war, which began again in Dec 1998 between UNITA rebels and the government. The government initially tried ground attacks, but has since moved to air attacks before sending in ground troops. There are problems in assessing what is occurring in the war, due to a lack of independent witnesses and lack of communication from the government. Starvation is likely due to the disruption of agriculture by the war.

Farewell to Savimbi
Article Abstract:
Angola's ruling party won the elections with 90% of citizens voting, but Savimbi cited rigged elections and plunged the country into continued civil war. The UN peacekeeping forces said the elections were mostly fair. The US should recognize the elected party.
