Social protection on Europe - national perogative or an EU concern?
Article Abstract:
Spending on social welfare in the European Union has risen dramatically over the past twenty years and has outstripped that of other major industrial nations. The rising budgets have strained government economies at a time when they are trying to control spending in order to meet the agreed rules for monetary union. The European Commission acknowledges that member nations must continue to fund their social welfare schemes but suggests that they discuss their problems with each other to see how reforms could best be carried out.

Commentary: energy and the single market
Article Abstract:
One of the biggest gaps in the European Union's (EU) single market is in the area of energy, with its special problems making it a sensitive issue within member nations. However, the pressures to liberalise the EU's energy industry are increasing, although the establishment of a unified energy policy will be a gradual process, with most countries likely to continue to have some dominant suppliers. A single market for energy will increase competition, but will also have environmental implications.
