Philips targets VLSI with $777 million bid
Article Abstract:
Royal Philips Electronics N.V. has made a bid to acquire VLSI Technology Inc. for about $777 milllion, or $17/share. Philips Electronics CEO Cor Boonstra said the Dutch company planned to use VLSI to help expand the sway of Philips Semiconductors in North America. Analysts say Philips needs to break out of the consumer-electronics chip market, which is expected to grow by only 4.2% annually between 1997 and 2002. VLSI, by contrast, has found a niche in the mobile-phone chip market, which is expected to grow by 8.3% annually between 1997 and 2002.
