Some Asians are still sensitive to West's dominance of media
Article Abstract:
Many Asians resent the control wielded by the Western news media over news about Asia. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad's denunciation of Rupert Murdoch's purchase of StarTV, Asia's new satellite television network, was the latest sign of this resentment. This view, long widespread in the Third World, is true to the extent that the international news media are dominated by Westerners who often know little about Asia. However, the same desire for profit that caused the Western media to move into Asia will also lead to the creation of genuinely Asian news media.

Bashing China is new U.S. fad: with Tokyo's trade surplus falling, America is focusing on Beijing
Article Abstract:
U.S. officials' criticism of China for its trade surplus is unjust because it is based on trade figures that are inaccurate and do not reflect the decline in trade surplus in other Asian countries. One of the reasons China's trade surplus has grown is because other Asian countries have moved their manufacturing to China. U.S. trade figures also do not account for the value added to Chinese exports when they pass through Hong Kong. In addition, the U.S. exports that go through Hong Kong to China are not accounted for in reducing China's surplus as they should.
