Some dangerous curves ahead
Article Abstract:
The US and British economies have undergone some years of growth, and both economies appear to be slowing, with the British economy moving into recession. Recession has already hit British manufacturing. There is pressure on profits in both countries, stockbuilding has increased, and short-term interest rates have risen above long-term rates. There is concern about recession in Britain, but many people in the US appear oblivious to the danger, which could exacerbate problems when they occur.

Through a glass darkly
Article Abstract:
There are problems in assessing what is occurring in the Chinese economy, since official statistics cannot be relied on, though it is clear that output tends to be exaggerated. Local data sent to central government are adjusted to take into account some inaccuracy. Electricity production figures may not take into account production from smaller plants. Official figures for Chinese gross domestic product may be exaggerating by between 1% and 3%, but this is guesswork.
