South Africa's race to find a permanent constitution

Thousands participated in a one-day strike in Johannesburg, South Africa, on April 30, 1996, to protest the new constitution being drafted. The strike called by the union COSATU, was backed by the African National Congress, and centered around provisions in the Bill of Rights on strikes and single-language schools.
