Africa's democratic joys and tribulations
Article Abstract:
Nigeria and South Africa have held elections and these cases show the obstacles to democracy in Africa, as well as symbolizing progress. Africa began to move toward democracy from the end of the 1980s, and 42 countries south of the Sahara have held elections, in addition to four existing democracies. Incumbents tend to win African elections, and votes can be manipulated. Opposition parties are often weak, and wealthy people often depend on ruling groups for their wealth. There is a case for assessing alternative types of democracy that may be more appropriate to Africa than multi-party systems.
