Southeast Asian boom sparks inflation concerns
Article Abstract:
The rapid growth of Southeast Asian economies has been accompanied by concomitant inflation. While Thailand recorded a 6.1% increase in consumer prices in Aug. 1995 over the previous year, consumer prices in the Philippines were up by 8.4% during the same period. Some economists, however, remain optimistic despite the prevailing inflation. They contend that the region's annual growth rate of about 6% to nearly 10% and Southeast Asian countries' proven ability to contain inflation are enough to guarantee continued economic expansion.
