Article Abstract:
New export opportunities are always needed by Canada, but both opportunities and risks lie in freer trade between Canada and the U.S., and via increased trade freedom under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The Economic Council of Canada is examining the pros and cons involved through a project on trade policy alternatives and the required structural adaptations. The project director is Sunder Magun, who is interviewed on topics including: project objectives, preliminary findings, applications of the compiled information, effects of a setback in U.S.-Canada freer trade negotiations, and the significance of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade talks.

Trade: competitiveness is the key
Article Abstract:
Sunder Magun will be the director of a new project sponsored by the Economic Council of Canada called 'Canada's Trade Prospects and International Competitiveness'. According to Magun, the project will use a World Trade Data Base developed by Statistics Canada in order to examine Canada's current competitive position and to understand growing trade and investment opportunities in the Pacific Region. The research will develop competitive indicators by analyzing Canadian trade patterns over the last 25 years in 63 commodity categories and 15 groups of countries.
