Spend, spend, spend
Article Abstract:
Taxes have increased as a percentage of gross domestic product since the Labor party gained power in Britain, though the government had previously claimed it was cutting taxes. Higher taxes was seen as a way of losing votes, and Conservative party leader, William Hague, claims that government should keep taxes low for moral reasons. There have been calls for increased spending on education and health, and there is a majority prepared to pay higher taxes to improve these services.

The age of fiscal socialism
Article Abstract:
Tax cuts have become less important as a political issue in the US and this is sometimes seen as a result of a strong economy. Voters may not belive promises about tax cuts, or may want Medicare and social security programs as they grow older. Capital gains from stocks may also lessen concern over taxes.

The enigma of acquiescence
Article Abstract:
It is arguable that higher taxes are an attempt by politicians to capture the middle class, who constitute the largest part of an electorate. Tax revenues that go to public spending are often for programs that benefit the middle classes more than the wealthy or the poor.
