Ancient and modern
Article Abstract:
Plans to make British companies more competitive have been set out by the trade and industry secretary, Peter Mandelson. Universities have become more commercially oriented, as is shown by the case of Cambridge University and its links with companies in the area. Mandelson aims to promote business by increasing spending on science and providing funds for new companies. Entrepreneurial skills are also important, and planning restrictions have been cited as hampering business development in Cambridge.

The white heat of Mandelson
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom trade and industry secretary, Peter Mandelson, was involved in moving the ruling Labor party to the political right when he was in opposition. His views continue to be on the right and he is not afraid of being unpopular. He argues that the UK should seek to develop a knowledge economy and that the government should support competition and science. There are risks involved in Mandelson's stance, since social dislocation may be necessary if the UK is to achieve the dynamism of the US.

Inexact science
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom chancellor, Gordon Brown, has performed well in terms of his macroeconomic policies, but this is less clear for his microeconomic reforms. Some changes have been helpful such as measures to ease the poverty trap by providing a tax credit for working families. The benefits of changes to capital gains tax are less clear cut. There are also problems with a planned tax break for venture capitalists backing small firms, and planned tax credits for research carried out by small firms.
