Spin off but stay in control
Article Abstract:
A future Labour government in the UK may take action to change tax laws which allow groups of companies to offset trading losses in one company against trading profits in another. This may prompt some corporate groups to consider breaking up their structure. It may be wise to consider using the demerger provisions in the Taxes Act if a future Labour government does limit tax relief for corporate groups.

Compass errors
Article Abstract:
The use of a compass for accurate navigation depends on an understanding of compass errors. The most basic error is variation. Variation is the angle between true north and north pointed by a compass unaffected by nearby influences. Navigators should recognize it and make allowances for it.

Oppenheimer's Institute
Article Abstract:
Derek Bok's Nov. 17, 1996 review that characterized the Institute as a leisurely and non-productive venue for science, was incorrect. Bok based his comment on an old quote attributed to Richard Feynman, who knew little of the great work produced at the Institute, and was never based there.
