Sri Lanka's second-hand Hercules will secure vital air corridor
Article Abstract:
The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) hopes to procure three C-130 Hercules aircraft from the UK Royal Air Force in an effort to boost its transport fleet to secure the vital air bridge to northern Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Aside from carrying out flight operations in the east of Sri Lanka, the SLAF needs to airlift around 1,000 troops and 35 tonnes of cargo per day to Jaffna because the forces of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) control all land routes to the region. The SLAF transport fleet was prompted to procure additional platforms following the loss of two Avro HS-748s, three An-32s, two Y-12s and a Y-8 to LTTE missile attacks which burdened the service.
