Stairway to heaven
Article Abstract:
Increased activity within the Scottish management buyout and buy-in markets has been driven by a demand for business entrepreneurs to purchase firms which they can turn around and sell on for a profit, rather than the desire to own their own firms. The average size of a Scottish management buyout has increased to nearly 7 million pounds sterling during 1997 from 5 million pounds sterling in 1996. The Bank of Scotland is becoming more involved in transactions in England, in the sub-10 million pounds sterling category.

Emu: a boost for buyouts
Article Abstract:
European Monetary Union (EMU) will make the process of acquisition and merger easier for firms wishing to buy into European businesses, when it is implemented in Jan 1999. Equity houses are raising funds through pan-European strategies in response to the forthcoming launch of EMU. Liquidity will be easier to generate within the European buyout market, encouraging investors from the US to buy more European shares. Investors should check firms for readiness of both EMU and the millennium bug.
