Stakes hold sway in insurance battle

Italian insurance firms are involved in a round of hostile takeover bids which could change the structure of the country's insurance industry. Agreements have been reached between San Paolo-IMI, Assicurazioni Generali and INA which should prevent an all out battle between the top Italian insurance firms. German telecommunications firm Mannesman has made a $32,595 million bid for UK based mobile operator Orange.
