Standing out from the herd
Article Abstract:
Many small companies in the UK are rather reluctant to become involved in exporting, fearing that this will bring insurmountable challenges. However, export sales can in fact be a valuable source of income. This has been the case at Giltspur Scientific, which now derives 80% of its turnover of 600,000 pounds sterling a year from exports, and at Boing, which exports more than 50% of its products. Small businesses considering exporting must research the market very carefully and always attempt to appreciate their customer's point of view.

Write before your eyes
Article Abstract:
Small businesses often have a rather haphazard approach to recruiting. This can bring disastrous consequences. It may be worth considering graphology, a service which involves having applicants' handwriting professionally analyzed. This can provide a valuable insight into how applicants will work with others, but should not be used as the only recruitment tool. Small businesses could also consider psychometric testing, for which costs vary considerably according to the level of service provided.

Getting good people to stay
Article Abstract:
Retaining good staff is becoming especially important for smaller firms as conditions in the labor market become more favorable for employees. Smaller firms can offer staff more experience than larger firms can, and they should seek to make key employees feel involved. Communication and recognition are important since salaries are not the only way to motivate staff. Staff should feel their contributions are valuable and this can be done through publicity for individual achievement.
