Article Abstract:
Pres Clinton used his Apr 1993 meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa to indicate that trade relations would supplant security matters as the dominant theme in post-Cold War US-Japanese relations. Clinton believes that the US sacrificed its economic interests during the Cold War and that US allies, particularly Japan, should now respond by redressing inequities in trade relations. Paramount among these inequities are the closed markets and unfair practices that have helped Japan build its huge trade surplus with the US. Clinton wants Japan to grant US exporters market share targets.

My shield or yours? US and Japan consider joint missile defence system
Article Abstract:
The Japanese and US governments are interested in a joint project for a theater missile defense system, inspired by North Korea's development of medium range missiles and its probable nuclear weapons program. The joint project must overcome the bad memories of the US-Japanese FSX jet fighter program which was canceled. There are fears that American interest in the project is a cover for acquiring Japanese technology.
