Running battle: contenders show different styles in campaigns
Article Abstract:
The 1993 party elections for the United Malays National Organization (Umno) are being characterized by campaigns that combine tradition and renewal. Leading contender for party leadership Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim can be found in corporate jets as he makes urban campaign stops to promote industrialization to business leaders and reciting Islamic prayers and telling dirty jokes to rural farmers. His competition, Ghafar Baba, has been forced to take a more grass roots approach to the campaign as Anwar has gained the ear of the press.
