Sterling questions: UK economy
Article Abstract:
Economic data released during the past few months has generally supported the view that the UK economy would see growth improve during the second half of 1996, further strengthening during 1997. Consumer spending has stayed strong with retail sales growth up to 3.6% in the second half, and manufacturing output appeared to be improving. However there is uncertainty about the impact of the economy of the recent rise in sterling, with a squeeze on export margins and tight control over costs in the exporting sector expected. Fears about an outright boom in consumer spending have been cooled, but there is still concern that consumer spending will growth faster than the 3.5% forecasted. Business investment is expected to grow strongly which should extend to manufacturing.

UK economy; bad debts and the recession
Article Abstract:
The depth of the present recession can be appreciated by the fact that the banks are cancelling bad debts at an unprecedented rate. Cancellations exceed those of the two previous recessions in the 1970's and 1980's. Against this trend company profits have been rising since 1991. This is explained by the increase in the number of businesses and that capital and income have grown. It is hoped lower inflation and property price stability will help effect a recovery.
