Stock exchange investigates trades that shook the market
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's securities regulators are investigating foreign securities houses for possible market manipulation. The stock exchange inquiry, possibly the biggest in recent years, was triggered by market-boosting trades made by foreign firms believed to be led by W.I. Carr. While some traders claim that efforts to move the Hang Seng Index do not constitute market manipulation, the Securities and Futures Commission has yet to make a decision on the legality of the trades. The fiasco underscores age-old tensions between local and foreign players.
