Russia will hold key regional elections in the latter part of 1996. The elections are important because the size of Russia encourages the leaders and legislatures of the country's 50 regions to take a greater role in their own government, after years of Communist centralization.

Yeltsin's next round
Article Abstract:
Yeltsin's victory over Communist Gennady Zyuganov does not insure that Yeltsin will serve out his full four-year term. He will have to address controversial issues such as Chechnya and economic reform. There is no clear successor to Yeltsin, if he dies in office.
