Storm clouds
Article Abstract:
Relations between the US and Indonesia are set to become increasingly strained in 1997. Human rights groups have been putting growing pressure on President Bill Clinton and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to focus on human rights in Indonesia, and this, along with other areas of concern, could have an impact on trade and investment in Indonesia. There is likely to be an investigation by US lawmakers into a decision by the Office of the US Trade Representative to suspend a review of Indonesia's trading status.

The buddy system: Clinton wants to resume military training for Indonesia
Article Abstract:
US President Bill Clinton's administration wants to restore funding of military training for Indonesian officers in hopes of increasing the transmission of democratic values. Such funding was cut off in 1992 due to concern over killings in East Timor. The administration's effort is likely to succeed with Republicans controlling both houses of Congress, but the present ban on the sale of some weapons to Indonesia will probably continue thanks to that country's deteriorating human-rights record.

Level pegging
Article Abstract:
Business links between the US and Indonesia are growing in complexity and scale, reaching $9.3 billion in direct two-way trade in 1994 and reaching beyond the traditional minerals and natural resources extraction. A Sept 12 decision by the US Export-Import bank to lend $168 million to Indonesian business group Bakrie Brothers is emblmematic of growing US interest and faith in Indonesia's companies. Leaders of the latter hope to become an important bridge between the US and the rest of Asia.
