Stormy tether: space science
Article Abstract:
The Aug 1992 mission of the space shuttle Atlantis was hailed as a success by NASA officials, despite the fact that the crew was unable to deploy a Tethered Satellite System (TSS). NASA has begun an investigation to determine the cause of the failure to launch the TSS.

Second sight: space telescopes
Article Abstract:
The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization is researching the possible use of large space telescopes in ballistic missile defense. A two-way telescope can track a missile, which would be destroyed by a powerful laser focused by the telescope's mirror.
