Strait talking
Article Abstract:
The US is seeking to encourage a dialog between China and Taiwan, and Taiwan appears to be accepting the need for a dialog, despite concern about the risks to Taiwanese autonomy. Discussions between Taiwan and China were ended by China in 1995 following a visit to the US by the Taiwanese president, Lee Teng-hui. Political change in China favors the resumption of a dialog, and Taiwanese investment in China would benefit from closer political links between the two countries. No mainstream political party in Taiwan is prepared to risk the loss of Taiwanese sovereignty.

Rocks of contention
Article Abstract:
The Diaoyu islands are claimed by China, and by Japan, which calls them the Senkakus. The dispute over the islands could affect China's relations with Japan and there is concern that the problem could escalate. The issue raises questions about Chinese nationalism and Japan's support for the political right. China is interested in the petroleum possibilities of the islands. Taiwan is also interested in the islands but fishing rights are the attraction rather than ownership of the islands.
