Strategic planning in a regulated trade bloc: the pharmaceutical industry in the European Union
Article Abstract:
Research into the pharmaceutical industry in the European Union (EU) found that the managers tend to react to changes in the industry rather than actively plan for the future. The pharmaceutical industry is governed by state regulatory control and therefore managers often have no direct input into policy decisions. Even when the industry makes strategic plans for the future these can become redundant if regulations change. The research is based on the opinions of ten managers, who were responsible for the business plans of major pharmaceutical companies, in the EU.
