Keeping the reform alive
Article Abstract:
Argentina faces challenges as a presidential election nears, and unemployment and homelessness are problems due to recession. Fernando de la Rua from the Alliance Party looks set to win the election. There is a desire for economic stability among the electorate, and economic reforms initally helped the economy, so there is still faith in reform. Fiscal discipline is seen as necessary. The future is not easy to predict since there are uncertainties relating to the currency and other issues, but Argentina will need luck, and the president will need sensible economic policies.

De la Rua's surprise for Argentina
Article Abstract:
The new Argentine president, Fernando de la Rua, and his ruling Alliance have taken measures to reduce the fiscal deficit from 7.1 billion US dollars in 1999 to 4.7 billion dollars. The government also aims to increase labor market flexibility and permit collective bargaining at corporate level. De la Rua has also been successful in terms of public relations, emphasising austerity and control of corruption. Economic growth is forecast at 3% for 2000, which will have little impact on unemployment, at 14%. De la Rua still faces difficult tasks.
