Students' encounters with Japanese prejudices reinforce nation's image as an island of distrust
Article Abstract:
Japan has tried hard to foster good relations with its Asian neighbors. However, as many Asian students in Japan have found out, Japanese society still retains its age-old antagonism and prejudices towards the rest of Asia. There are some 60,000 Asians studying in Japanese universities and majority of them have encountered this prejudice in some form of another. Some simply shrug it off but for many others, the unpleasant incidents serve to foster a deep bitterness and mistrust against all things Japanese.

One woman's troubled life offers rare insight into the workings of a modern Japanese family
Article Abstract:
Kaname Odachi's family typifies a modern Japanese family with children defiant of social conventions. Odachi was one of the many troublesome teenagers referred by police and parents to mental institutions despite their normal and harmless behavior. The pressure to conform to Japanese society has alienated some teenagers and families have difficulty dealing with the problem. Although children are taught to speak up and never be shy, Japanese society expects them to behave otherwise.

Japanese students, not immune from the disease, have a prescription to fight bias: speak out
Article Abstract:
Many Japanese students in Sophia University in Tokyo acknowledge the problem of prejudice towards other Asians. They sympathize with Asian students who have to put up with unpleasant incidents but they also believe that not all the blame should be put on the Japanese. They disagree with the tendency of most victims to remain quiet and they believe that victims of harassment and prejudice should speak out as it would call attention to the problem.
