Subic Bay appears to thrive in Richard Gordon's wake; three months after contentious departure as chairman, industrial free port retains investors
Article Abstract:
The battle for supremacy over the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority ended on Sep 1, 1998, with the Philippine Supreme Court's decision to upheld the right of Pres Joseph Estrada to choose his own man for the top position. Richard Gordon staged his refusal to follow Estrada's order by barricading himself inside the free port for two months. With the Supreme Court's order, he was replaced by the chosen replacement, Felicito Payumo. While it was true that Gordon was responsible for creating the free port, the place continued to be successful three months after he left.
