Pakistans new ruler, general Pervez Musharraf, has set a deadline for repayment of parts of loans by loan defaulters on Nov 16 1999, and they must also agree to a timetable to repay the remainder. This move could help tackle the problem of corruption in Pakistan, and strengthen respect for the law. Investors' confidence could be restored by this move. There are some $4 billion worth of bad debts, and 70% of the total is owed by 322 families, central bank officials estimate.
