Subsidies in the air
Article Abstract:
British trade and industry secretary, Stephen Byers, has announced aid for BAE Systems for the company's share in an Airbus project. The economic arguments for the subsidy are dubious, though Beoing, which is competingwith Airbus, receives covert subsidies. It would be better if neither company had subsidies. The risks involved mean that taxpayers may not get back their investment. The private sector funds other risky ventures, and could fund this one. Unemployment is low, so arguments about jobs saved or created are weak.

A Byers market
Article Abstract:
British trade and industry secretary, Stephen Byers, has rejected three recommendations by British competition authorities. The recommendations include one that Birds Eye Wall should not be allowed to sell directly to retailers, due to its monopoly power. There is concern that Byers may be unable to resist pressure on major issues such as supermarkets and car pricing, if he cannot decide on less important issues such as ice cream and milk marketing.
