Investment is the goal
Article Abstract:
Cross-border acquisitions into France almost doubled in value in 1997 compared to the previous year's figures. The 409 deals were worth a total of 25.2 billion pounds sterling, with US firms accounting for 100 of these deals. The privatisation programme has slowed down, but a major forthcoming privatisation will be that of banking group Credit Lyonnais. The French economy attracts mixed comments. Analysts predict growth of more than 3% in 1998 and the country has an excellent infrastructure, but unemployment is 12%, the pension system is outmoded and labour costs are high.

A room with a view to expansion
Article Abstract:
Flexibility is a key element in business success, according to Birkby Deputy Chief Executive Kim Taylor-Smith. The concern, which regards itself as a business services group, now leads the UK market for managed commercial space. It offers clients the possibility of renting additional space temporarily, and can also allow clients to take leases of up to five years. When considering potential acquisitions, it looks only at those which can offer a 20% return on capital within a year.

The changing face of M&A
Article Abstract:
The UK mergers and acquisitions market has become increasingly sophisticated since Acquisitions Monthly magazine was first published in Nov 1984. At that time, there was strong emphasis on financially-driven deals, frequently by conglomerates and leveraged players. Nowadays, the focus is on strategic consolidation within industries. However, many of the merchant banks which were active in mergers and acquisitions in the mid-1980s are still involved in many deals today.
