Sue Sumii
Article Abstract:
Sue Sumii, the advocate of Japan's untouchables, died on June 6, 1997 at the age of 95. Sue Sumii has spent her life trying to increase awareness on the subject of 'barakumin' or Japan's untouchables and hopefully, improve the way they are treated. She has spent her life exposing the social ills of Japan's racial system and her book, 'The River With no Bridge,' remains the sole link between this class and the rest of the outside world.

Eudora Welty
Article Abstract:
Writer Eudora Welty, who died on July 23, 2001, at the age of 92, was only a first-generation southerner but her writing captured the spirit of the South. Her stories changed non-southerners' perceptions of the South.

Article Abstract:
Welty, now age 84, is also an amateur photographer. The stark directness of her photos of ordinary Southerners is similar to her vivid writing style. She admires the work of VS Pritchett, Jane Austen and Willa Cather.
