Thailand's political reforms since 1997 have been brought into question by the Constitutional Court's failure to censure prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. A counter-corruption body had found Thaksin guilty of concealing assets, but the Court overturned this without any clear explanation.

The mighty fall in South Korea

Military coup leader Chun Doo Hwan, who ruled South Korea with an iron hand in the early 1980s, received the death sentence for human rights and corruption crimes committed during his tenure as leader. His protege, Roh Tae Woo, was sentenced to life imprisonment for similar convictions.

The political corruption scandal in Japan has now spread to include the judges who let Shin Kanemaru and other politicians off with light fines. Opposition party leaders want a full investigation of the conduct of the trials and a reinvestigation of corrupt officials.
