Suharto's mega-opportunity: troubles can boost Indonesia's stability
Article Abstract:
President Suharto of Indonesia may be able to use his country's current unrest to lead Indonesia towards stability. Indonesia is currently undergoing ethnic unrest and political divisiveness. The opposition lead by Megawati Sukarnoputri, strongly quelled by the government, is indicative of the unease of the middle class during a period of increasing material expectations from a developing economy. Unlike other rulers in Asian developing countries, Suharto himself is seen by his people as the primary mover in the country.

Success and succession: preparing Indonesia for after Suharto
Article Abstract:
Indonesia must contend with higher political standards as well as the higher GNP that has helped raise them, and this complicates the succession picture there. President Suharto's government arranged the removal of Megawati Sukarno from leadership of the opposition Democratic Party, then Suharto himself went suddenly to Germany for medical treatment. People in Indonesia already feel put-upon, regardless of their economic development, and Suharto's actions can only endear Megawati to them, troubling his succession.

Reviving the dinosaur?
Article Abstract:
The Non-Aligned Movement is holding its 10th summit in Indonesia in 1992 amidst questions on its continuing relevance in a world that has survived the Cold War. Indonesian Pres Suharto has advised participants to desist from making the meeting a forum for political abuse and instead, turn it into a vehicle for international cooperation. Constructive criticism rather than confrontation has been urged.
