Japan Could Regain Appeal

Foreign investors sold a net 871 billion yen ($7.97 billion) of Japanese stocks in the six weeks before April 21 2000, ending their year long support of the Japanese stock market. But many economists predicted stronger growth for later in the year.

Summer blues in Japan: investors look to weather recent rough patch

Financial analysts expect the Japanese stock market to rebound from a disappointing drop in early Jul 1997, and say that the 4% decline was just a temporary correction. The drop in the Nikkei Stock Average has mirrored similar declines in four of the five years since 1993. The 1997 plunge came after some large investors began using futures to hedge against an equity drop in their Japanese holdings.
