Cuts in commissions by United Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines and others are threatening the income of travel agents in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Strategies for replacing lost income range from instituting fixed customer service fees of 4-5% of the ticket price, to promoting more lucrative tour packages.

South Korean tourists and expatriates working in Hong Kong are among the travelers expected to come to Cebu for the Lunar New Year holiday despite recent political turmoil in Manila. American carriers such as Continental Airlines and United Airlines will introduce nonstop service between Hong Kong and New York in order to compete with Cathay Pacific Airlines, Hong Kong's home carrier.
