Many banks are increasing the scope of the merger and acquisition work in London, England, as they seek to benefit from the large number of deals currently taking place. ABN-Amro, for example, is currently appointing up to 15 new executives to work for Hugh Scott-Barrett, chief executive of European corporate finance. WestMerchant Group has appointed Richard Briance as chief executive, while Michael Tarrant has been appointed co-head of European M and A at Credit Suisse First Boston.

Michael Tarrant became co-head of European Mergers and Acquisitions at investment bank Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) in Sept 1997. CSFB UK is located in Canary Wharf, London, near to its newly acquired corporate finance and European equities business BZW, which it bought for 162 million pounds sterling in 1997. Tarrant is seeking to build CSFB into a strong company which can compete with the likes of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs on a global basis.

Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) launched the LBO Coverage Group in 1997 which was aimed at providing services for the pan-European private equity market. CSFB offers investment and commercial banking services and one of its most recent deals includes the $1.7 billion acquisition of Herberts by KKR from Hoescht. The company aims to lead the market for investment banking services among private equity companies in Europe.
