The political situation in Albania is shaky as deposed President Sali Berisha may yet resist stepping down from power despite conceding defeat. Fatos Nano is expected to be the country's next leader but his political orientation may yet shift in a direction disagreeable to most Albanians. There is also the question of whether the transition between governments will remain smooth with Berisha supporters causing no trouble.

Albania saw a two-thirds turnout for the country's Jun 29, 1997, election and an apparent Socialist victory, although it is still uncertain as to whether the power shift will be a smooth one. Pres Sali Berisha of the right wing Democratic party has said he will step aside 'as soon as possible.'
