A place in the country
Article Abstract:
Obstacles to foreign investment in inland provinces must be overcome if China is to narrow the widening gap between the increasingly prosperous coastal cities and the poverty-stricken interior. Some foreign companies are taking the plunge, lured by cheap land and labor, abundant natural resources, an underserved domestic market, and red-carpet treatment. However, barriers include deficiencies in infrastructure and transportation, unenlightened management, underdeveloped markets, and the difficulties of persuading foreign managers to live in the interior.

Wang's world
Article Abstract:
Chinese writer Wang Shuo won fame and fortune first for writing, then for film-making, but his subversive style may be attracting a recent string of bad luck. He first gained attention for the the book Air Stewardess, written in 1982 and made into a hit mini-series in 1984, and has become increasing well-known. All 20 of the books that he wrote through 1991 were best-sellers, winning fans with their accurate depictions of Beijing's hooligans and their gutter slang, but several current movie projects are in limbo or have been stopped by officials.
