Survival, against the odds
Article Abstract:
Iran's clergy are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their revolution which has survived war and economic sanctions. Iran still faces serious economic problems. There are divisions within the regime between conservatives and reformists. Petroleum prices have dropped and this has hit the economy since petroleum accounts for four fifths of exports from Iran. An austerity budget has been approved from 1999 to 2000. Unemployment is higher than official estimates of 12%, and demonstrations have been carried out by unpaid workers.
