Survivor locators
Article Abstract:
Israeli Tadiran Spectralink has been awarded a contract to supply the US Navy with personal locator beacon/voice transceivers (PLB/VTs) and emergency locator transmitters (ELTs), which will replace the current search and rescue systems in the service's inventory. The PLB/VT are capable of providing automatic position, and latitude and longtitude information through the GPS receiver embedded in the systems. According to the company, the systems with embedded GPS receiver also offer geolocation within less than 330 ft, while offering beacon ranges of more than 25 nm with the receiver aircraft at 1,000 ft above ground level and 50 nm at 10,000 ft.

Gen II FLIR hits snag
Article Abstract:
The US Congress has asked the US Army to explain why one type of FLIR for aviation is preferred over another for ground vehicles. Until a report has been submitted, the service is prohibited from spending money on buying the new sensor package for the Apache. The Army prefers The Standard Advanced Dewar Assembly versions I technology over version II as the basis for the aviation FLIR due to its better sensitivity for aviation-related tasks.
