The new Derbyshire Children's Hospital aims to create an environment that will distract the children's attention from the reasons for their visits to the hospital. The reception area features colourful carpets, green plants, a fountain and provides a sense of calm. Each area of the hospital has a separate theme and children are provided with board games, books, televisions and outdoor play areas. There is also provision for older children, with a snooker table, a kitchen, TV and video and table football.

The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London, England is designed differently from most hospitals. It has a large seven storey high central atrium which is surrounded by the medical departments. The atruim is overlooked by patients and represents the main public space of the building with walkways giving access to the wards. It has six exposed lifts and steel staircases. Fire escape is provided by means of a supplementary corridor and isolated lifts. Standard industrial steel fittings are used.
