Swift, tough justice: due process raised in Chun-Roh trial
Article Abstract:
Problems of due-process allegedly are slowing the pace of the trial of former South Korean Presidents Chun Doo Hwan, Roh Tae Woo and twelve generals for treason and mutiny involving government brutality against pro-democracy protesters in 1979 and 1980. The three-judge panel has tried to speed the process of the trial, causing the defendants' state-appointed attorneys to complain. The court has given itself an August 19, 1996, deadline for a verdict. A guilty verdict is predicted and would be appealed immediately.

Seeking stability; President Kim gets limited mandate from election
Article Abstract:
The results of South Korea's Apr 11, 1996 general elections provided incumbent President Kim Young Sam with enough friendly coalition support in government to last through the end of his term in Feb 1998. North Korea's recent intrusion into the Demilitarized Zone alarmed voters who responded by endorsing Kim Young Sam's ruling New Korea Party. The conservative United Liberal Democrats won 50 Parliamentary seats, making it the country's second-largest minority political party.

What, we worry? South Korea's chaebol remain unscathed by scandal
Article Abstract:
South Korea businessmen who contributed to former President Roh Tae Woo's $654 million slush fund were publicly embarrassed, but their companies did not appear to suffer. The influence of the giant conglomerates, called chaebol, on the economy is so great that they did not get punished. The banking industry, however, was greatly criticized for its handling of Roh's funds. The end result of the scandal should be that politicians will stop asking businessmen for their money.
