Turning the corner
Article Abstract:
Economists expect Singapore to see an economic rebound, helped by the recovery in the important electronics industry. The slowdown in the economy was not as bad as predicted, and although manufacturing grew by only 3.4% in 1996, financial services grew by 8.2% and construction was up 18.4%. The Trade and Industry ministry expects GDP to grow by 5-7% in 1997, with the rise in world electronics demand and the country's investment in manufacturing. However there is concern about the country's dependence on the electronics sector for growth, and rising costs are also a problem.

The lion's hare: Hong Kong vs. Singapore: it isn't about 1997
Article Abstract:
The runup to Hong Kong's 1997 transition to Chinese rule has heated up its competition against Singapore to attract companies' Asian Bheadquarters. While rent costs favore Singapore it costs more in other ways, and labor costs are rising more rapidly there. Many observers say Singapore is simply growing more attractive faster than Hong Kong, while others contend geography, an uncontrollable factor, is key. The two are also major trading partners, and may face more competition from other regional cities than from each other.
