Swiss insurance policy for European integration
Article Abstract:
Zurich Insurance and Winterthur Insurance are two Swiss companies poised to make substantial gains in the European insurance industry as a result of the single European market of 1992. Allianz of Germany and Assicurazioni Generali of Italy are two insider insurance firms that will benefit from a European insurance industry unification. Companies are being given the option to expand beyond their regional borders in an increasingly competitive European market. Insurance companies, in particular, are using corporate restructurings and takeovers to vie for key positions in the global market. The Swiss corporations have the advantage of longer prior experience in the global marketplace; innovative changes; and a 'multilocal' strategy.

Eastern European insurance industry moves from state monopoly to competitive market
Article Abstract:
The insurance sectors in seven formerly communist Central and Eastern European countries are profiled to illustrate their transformation into competitive markets. The extent to which the former state insurance monopolies have progressed down the road to market reform varies, as not all of the countries have the prerequisites needed for the formation of a viable market. Three key components that need to be established before any of these countries can develop a competitive insurance industry are an established legal framework, a modern capital market, and a mature insurance culture.
