THE FOUL SMELL OF FAST GROWTH
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court directed that 103 of the 700-odd dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur should be immediately closed in May 1998 for not having installed effluent treatment plants (ETP). The remaining units which have started constructing independent ETPs or common ETPs will be allowed to operate until July 20, 1998 when the next hearing is to take place. Closing these dyeing and bleaching units will severely affect Tirupur's garment exports which contributes Rs3,300 crore every year to the country's total garment exports of Rs18,000 crore. Closing the units will also render 500,000 workers jobless. The units have requested that they be allowed to continue operations until they set up their ETPs. (khr)

THE PERFETTI Vs CANDICO GUM BATTLE
Article Abstract:
The Nagpur district court passed an interim order on September 5, 1998 stating that Perfetti India could not use the brandname, Big Babol, on its bubble gum as the name was similar to Candico's Big Bubble Gum. Perfetti has already lost business of Rs4 crore in the 20 days since the order was passed. Candico claims that it has been using the Big Bubble Gum trademark since 1989 and had applied for brand registration in April 1994 but Perfetti says that it had registered that Big Babol brand in November 1981. The Big Babol brand is valued at Rs100 crore while Candico's bubble gum is a Rs4 crore brand. (khr)
