The Economic Times has analysed the performance of 500 scrips from different industries during 1998 based on the data of India Index Service & Products. It has found that cigarettes manufacturers have topped the list with an Index turnover of Rs587,132.6 million and accounted for 17 percent of total turnover. The software industry ranks second with Rs544,110.34 million and accounts for 15.79 percent of the total turnover in 1998. Petrochemicals ranks third with Rs218,695.58 million accounting for 6.35 percent of total turnover. The banking industry comes fourth with Rs200,206.55 million accounting for 5.81 percent of the total turnover in 1998. (rk)(m)
