AMARA RAJA TO ENTER REPLACEMENT MARKET

Amara Raja Batteries plans to enter the replacement market by 1999-2000. It entered into a joint venture with Johnson Controls of the US in January 1998 by giving it a 23 percent stake and wants to leverage its expertise. It has only been catering to the original equipment manufacturer segment until now, where the volumes are minimal. The company is setting up a Rs60 crore facility to manufacture automotive batteries and has also undertaken a backward integration project to manufacture plastic outer covers for the batteries. (khr)

Amara Raja Batteries has posted a net profit of Rs10.38 crore on sales of Rs44.89 crore in the third quarter ended December 1998. It has posted a net profit of Rs29.30 crore on a sales of Rs125 crore in the nine months ended December 31, 1998. Its annualised earnings per share works out to Rs38. (rk)(m)
