Pune is fast emerging as the software capital of India. Several software companies prefer to set up offices in Pune due to availability of talent, good infrastructural facilities, proximity to Mumbai and VSNL's earth station at Arvi, 90 kms from Pune. Pune is connected to Mumbai and other metros both by rail and air. The new Mumbai-Pune expressway is expected to be completed by January 2000 AD. This will reduce the driving time between the two cities to two hours. Mahindra British Telecom, Scale Mindworks (Pvt) Ltd, CG-CoreEl, Parametric Technology, Ruksun and Geometric Software Services Co Ltd and Infosys have set up offices in Pune. The Software Technology Parks of India in Pune houses around 50 units and provides infrastructural support and high-speed telecommunication links. Pune has its own fully- functional private software park with its own satellite links. Pune Telecom plans to set up ISDN facilities for corporates in Pune with new nodes for Internet connectivity. INFOSYS TO INVEST Rs50 Cr IN PROPOSED CHENNAI CAMPUS
Article Abstract:
Infosys Technologies Ltd (ITL) plans to spend more than Rs50 crore on its new software development campus near Chennai. The campus which will be on a 15-acre area will be ready by the end of 1999 and will take in 1,000 people. Apart from software development and training centres, the campus will house sports and gym facilities and a food court. Currently, Infosys has 11 development centres located in Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Mangalore and Pune. Infosys is expected to post sales of about Rs500 crore crore during 1998. (ag)

SONATA SHIFTS FOCUS TO EXPORT MARKET
Article Abstract:
Sonata Software Limited (SSL) plans to focus on the international market its exports have been increasing by 100 percent each year. In the first half of 1997-98, its global operations contributed 54 percent to its turnover (40 percent in 1996-97). SSL is a subsidiary of Indian Organic Chemicals Limited. SSL made a net profit of Rs4.41 crore on a turnover of Rs54 crore in the first half of 1998-99. (rk)
