Article Abstract:
Aluminium producers have urged the government to reduce import duty on aluminium scrap from 25 percent to around 5 percent in the 1998-99 budget. The import duty on semi fabricated products must be increased from 15 percent to 25 percent. The performance of aluminium manufacturers improved during 1997-98, due to increase in price of base metal to $1,300-$1,400 per tonne ($1,100 per tonne in 1996-97). (gs)

Article Abstract:
The Cement Manufactures Association (CMA) has urged the government to continue with the present duty structure of Rs350 per tonne in the 1998-99 budget. CMA is against a more complex advalorem duty structure. According to CMA, the government must increase outlay on infrastructure and concrete roads. The domestic cement industry has been affected by excess capacity of 100 million tonnes per annum. (gs)
